Abstract

The scenes and incidents in Ireland during the 1700's have been used by some novelists for their best works; but the facts given by Barrington surpass them all in wildness and romance. The reader is brought face to face with hunting squires, fire-eating duelists, beautiful ladies, intriguing politicians, witty peasants, Jack Giffard the Orangeman, Wolf Tone the United Irishman, and the host of gay, brilliant, clever, high minded, unprincipled men and women who made up Society in Ireland at the beginning of the 18th century. The fierce fights, the marriage speculations, debtor's prison, the life at court, are all described in racy style by one who played a part in all such incidents.
