Abstract
The study of lawyers making their own laws is not a traditional legal subject. this is probably the first book concerning that inner sanctum of lawyers' law, the "division" of lawyers into two "branches" (or two professions), barristers and solicitors. We consider the origins of division, the official explanations, and the real reasons for it. Its history has been a closed book even to lawyers. Only in the light of its history can its present "public reformations" be properly assessed.
