Abstract
Secession is the process by which a State would withdraw from the Australian Commonwealth, and assert its own independence. Craven's book is the first to analyse in detail all the major issues relating to secession, which is considered as a historical, political and legal phenomenon. He pays considerable attention to the views of the Founding fathers, while the course of the extremely serious Western Australian secession movement between 1930 and 1935 is fully dealt with. All the means through which secession might conceivably be achieved by legal steps are postulated and analysed. These include the possibility of legislation being passed unilaterally by the Parliament of the State concerned, by the Parliament of the United Kingdom, or by the Commonwealth Parliament.
