Abstract
"In 1979 I was given access by the current (eighth) Earl of Mansfield to the trial notes of the first Earl, Chief Justice of the Court of King's Bench of England from 1756 to 1788. The fifty-five surviving trial notebooks housed at Scone palace on Perth, Scotland are small (about six by nine inches), leather-bound books, opening vertically, each containing approximately 125 leaves. Within, on both sides of each leaf, are Lord Mansfield's handwritten notes of testimony presented in jury trials over which he presided..." -Preface
