Abstract
"This volume is the result of a most unusual discovery. Only two years after the Society published The Report of Sir John Spelman, a manuscript was sold at Sotheby's which appeared to have been compiled in a similar manner by Spelman's near contemporary and judicial colleague, Sir John Port. The manuscript had not previously been known to scholars, and its provenance remains something of a mystery. Although the contents turned out to be rather les substantial than Spelman, they nevertheless possess considerable interest as the earliest notes in the hand of an identifiable common lawyer - and as including the earliest law reports known to have been written by an English judge. Much of the notebook consists of student notes from the year books and disjointed jottings of limited usefulness, and it has therefore been decided to abridge the contents for publications. in making the selection, I have developed a true sympathy with Sir Christopher Yelverton, whose work in abridging and rearranging Spelman I had to unravel in the course of editing that text..." - Preface
