Abstract
"I always thank my stars for the escape I had over the Tichborne case. After the clairmant had been committed for trial upon the charge of perjury, he placed himself in the hands of Mr. Gorton, a solicitor, of Bedford Row. That gentleman instructed me to make an application for bail, the prisoner being at the time in Newgate. This application could be made either before a Judge, or the alderman presiding at the Guildhall, and it was arranged that I should go before the latter" - Chapter 1
