Abstract
"Carmarthen's Gaoler's journal, transcribed and annotated in this and the following volume, is a worthy tribute to Victorian bureaucracy. A large, calf-bound book, its contents are to a great degree routine and entirely predictable. this is as it should be. A Victorian prison is supposed to be a place in which the predictable both happens and is recorded as having happened: weeks should pass and pages should turn with the monotonous regularity of the revolving treadwheel which features throughout the manuscript..." - Introduction
