Abstract
"These volumes began to take a kind of projected shape almost fifteen years ago in a conversation with Professor S.F.C. Milsom. over the intervening years, my ideas about what kinds of cases ought to be included here were heavily influenced by his work on history of torts and on the role of pleading rules and trial techniques in producing substantive law. In addition, much of the framework that the introduction seeks to provide for understanding the cases reflects the extent of the debt that I owe to his vision of medieval English legal process. I am not at all clear that the work that eventuated in these volumes could have been done without the guidance that his previous work and friendly help provided; I am quite clear that I could not myself have done it..." - Preface
